Ignatian prayer is personal, it’s life changing….it opens the way for our humanness to come into contact with God – the Creator, our Redeemer, the Lover of our soul. St. Ignatius of Loyola encourages us to find God in everything. He is in nature, in our daily routines, in our vocation, in our conversations and interactions with others, in our car while we navigate traffic. Ignatius said “All the things in this world are gifts of God, created for us, to be the means by which we can come to know him better, love him more surely, and serve him more faithfully.”

In the summer months life is full in a different way. It is a time of rest but, that also makes way for a lot of activities including visiting family, going on vacation, and traveling away from home. The structured routine of the normal year tends to change, and interestingly, even though we may find more spare time in the summer months, we can find it harder to prioritize prayer because of the lack of structure. That shift in routine can put our prayer lives in the “desert” and may bring our prayer lives into a period of desolation.

“He told me to behold His heart which so loved humanity. Then He seemed to take my very heart from me and place it there in His heart. In return He gave me back part of His flaming heart.”

Gardening is no easy task in Colorado. Dry weather and strong sunlight can be challenging for even the greenest thumbs. Late February is a time to daydream about juicy red tomatoes and bright flowers blossoming in your backyard. A good garden takes time and planning. It means tilling the soil, enriching the earth with fertilizer and water. It means pulling out the old weeds and dead plants from last year.

It’s heart season. Go into Walgreens and there are hearts everywhere. You’ll see paper hearts, chocolate hearts, candy hearts and more. We’re approaching Valentine’s Day, February 14. For many this is a day of love or a night of romance. Meet your sweetheart for dinner or dessert? For others, it is a day of heartbreak— recalling a broken relationship and or love that was not returned.  

Many of us fill every quiet moment with sound — music, conversation, distraction — without realizing what we’re avoiding. In this short reflection, Fr. Joe Laramie, SJ, invites us to reconsider silence not as emptiness, but as a place of rest, attentiveness, and encounter.

My dad died in March. He lived with kidney cancer for seven years. I preached at his funeral. I am mourning my father, and I am asking God the Father for mercy and help.
