About
A Place Set Apart for
Prayer and Discernment
Sacred Heart Jesuit Retreat House is a Catholic, Jesuit ministry serving God’s people in Colorado and beyond. Founded in 1959 by Fr. Raphael C. McCarthy, SJ, Sacred Heart sits on 280 acres in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains near Sedalia, Colorado, at an elevation of 6,000 feet. For nearly seventy years, this land has been a place of peace, prayer, and grace — where tens of thousands have come to step away from daily life and attend more deeply to God.
Rooted in the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola, Sacred Heart offers retreats that invite reflection, silence, and discernment. Here, retreatants are encouraged to listen carefully — to Scripture, to prayer, and to the movements of God in their own lives—as they grow in faith, hope, and love.
Our Setting
The retreat house is a place from which to see clearly. To the west, the mountains rise over the foothills; to the east, valleys and mesas stretch into the distance. This natural setting supports silence and prayer, offering space to look outward at creation and inward toward the path on which God may be guiding you.
Retreats Rooted in Jesuit Tradition
Sacred Heart offers weekend retreats and days of prayer led by Jesuits, shaped by the Ignatian tradition of reflection, spiritual conversation, and attentiveness to God’s presence. Through Mass, the Sacrament of Reconciliation, Eucharistic adoration, and guided reflection, retreatants are invited to encounter the love and mercy of Christ in a spirit of reverence and quiet.
In addition to individual retreats, Sacred Heart welcomes parish, school, and ministry groups for weekend retreats and days of prayer. We work closely with Catholic parishes, schools, and the three dioceses of Colorado to foster spiritual growth and deeper engagement with faith and prayer.
Our Mission
Sacred Heart, a Roman Catholic Retreat House, is an apostolate of the Jesuits of the USA Central and Southern Province. Everything that Sacred Heart offers is inspired by the vision expressed in the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus. Sacred Heart welcomes all who come to deepen their knowledge and love of Jesus Christ and of their ecclesial traditions through retreats and other means of spiritual growth.
Practical Guidelines for a Spirit of Peace
To help maintain an atmosphere of prayer, safety, and reverence, the following are not permitted on the property: firearms or weapons, fireworks, drones, open fires, tobacco, drugs or alcohol, and pets (with the exception of registered service animals for individuals with disabilities).
Retreatants must be 18 years of age or older, unless participating in a supervised school or parish group retreat. For full guidelines or specific questions, please contact our office.
