Frequently Asked Questions and Answers
What is a "silent" retreat?
A silent retreat (directed, private, or preached) provides time to get
away from the often-hectic pace of daily life and give undivided attention
to reflection and prayer. Retreatants enter into silence at the start
of their retreat and remain silent (including meals) throughout their
stay, except during conferences with their spiritual director and their
participation in the celebration of Eucharist.
Is there a daily schedule for retreatants?
Retreat structure varies according to the program: directed retreats
offer one meeting each day with a spiritual director; private retreats
focus on personal reflection and prayer without a director; and
preached retreats (including weekend retreats) feature two conference
talks each morning and afternoon. All retreats provide ample time
for solitude, relaxing, reading, thinking, and praying. Eucharist
is celebrated once each day, usually at 11:30 a.m. Meal times are
scheduled as follows: breakfast-8:00 a.m., lunch-12:00 noon, and
dinner-6:00 p.m.
What should I bring?
Personal items, casual clothing, comfortable shoes for walking, and perhaps
a good book or two.
Do any of the rooms have private baths?
No; each of the forty-five single private rooms is equipped with a bed,
desk, chair, sink, and a set of bath towels and bed linens. Bathroom
and shower facilities are centrally located on each corridor.
What if I get hungry between meals?
Complimentary beverages, fruit, and light snacks are always available
in the main dining room.
